  18. <p>     Life on the Politburo is not a lot of fun these days. If
  19. Mikhail Gorbachev isn't changing the job descriptions of the
  20. Soviet leaders, the parliament is poking its nose into party
  21. business. Now the Supreme Soviet's Commission on Privileges is
  22. taking an ax to some of the things that made party life worth
  23. living, specifically the comfortable dachas, or country houses,
  24. enjoyed by the elite.

  26. <p>     Under a new Soviet law, more than 20 homes will be turned
  27. over to the Health Ministry. Only Gorbachev and Premier Nikolai
  28. Ryzhkov will retain their country residences. Says Ella
  29. Panfilova, a commission staffer: "We've already had people
  30. calling to complain. Some are really angry."
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     Even retirement will pall for former Politburo members. They
  33. will have to do without the household workers and car the state
  34. had provided to each. That's enough to make a bigwig take to
  35. his sickbed, but illness could be a problem too. The number of
  36. people entitled to use the special clinics reserved for the
  37. privileged will be cut by two-thirds.
